*The need for a permanent cath lab to help save the lives of heart attack victims was outlined at the recent launch of the funding campaign by Dr Donal Murray, Consultant Cardiologist at Sligo University Hospital.

‘While we have a very good service in place currently within the hospital and prior to admission for patients who have suffered a heart attack, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory is now regarded as the treatment of choice for many patients with acute myocardial infarction within two hours of first medical contact,’ he says.
This service is currently not provided in the North West. The nearest such centre is in Dublin or Galway – a two- to three-hour drive time, too far to be of benefit for a heart attack patient in the northwest”.
And while Sligo University Hospital was the first hospital in Ireland to introduce the concept of a visiting cath lab in 2000, it is provided on just one day per week, providing a diagnostic service for patients with suspected heart disease or heart attack.
The future of cardiac services nationally is currently being examined and it is hoped that Sligo University Hospital will be approved for a fixed laboratory. This would dramatically improve the quality of care of patients with cardiac conditions in Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, north Roscommon, north Mayo and West Cavan”, he said.

Welcoming this positive development,

Gerry McManus, Chairperson Friends of Sligo University Hospital, stated “I greatly appreciate the support from Pet Stop for our fundraising initiatives for the hospital and I ask for staff and users of the hospital service to support Pet Stop in this venture”.

Domhnall Mc Loughlin, Assistant Regional Manager, Sligo University Hospital stated “I warmly welcome the decision of Pet Stop to designate the Friends of Sligo University Hospital as its Charity of the Year.  I sincerely thank John and Alistair from Pet Stop for their generosity particularly in these difficult economic times.  I urge other local businesses to consider similar initiatives to help the Friends of Sligo University Hospital in its fundraising endeavours”.
